Description
The fishermen's houses, built around 1670, are craftsmen's houses typical of the region and bear witness to the pre-industrial history of Romanshorn. These houses once stood directly on the shores of the lake and evidently served as dwellings and, in some cases, as workshops for boatmen, tinsmiths, coppersmiths and cobblers. Together with the neighbouring properties, they are the last remaining traces of the homes of fishermen and craftsmen of that era.
The story of the place
Various details — such as the timber-framed structure of the walls, remnants of old wallpaper, the winding entrances to the rooms and the different levels of the plank floors — bear witness to the simple life of the 17th and 18th centuries. From 1998 onwards, various redevelopment projects had been pursued, including the demolition of the fishermen's houses, until in January 2009, after lengthy negotiations and an appeal, the Thurgau Monument Foundation was able to acquire them and renovate them in 2010/2011.
